Alongside news that the Victorian Government is giving away 250,000 free vouchers for public transport this summer, it’s also been announced that travel will be free on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.

“Victorians will no doubt be keen this festive season to celebrate their hard-won freedom, so we’re making sure they have travel options to do just that,” public transport minister Ben Carroll said in a statement.

Both metropolitan and regional services (including trains, trams, buses and the Vline) will be free for a full 24 hours, from 3am on December 25 until 3am on December 26. Services will run to a regular public holiday timetable.

And for New Year’s Eve, travel is free for 12 hours from 6pm on December 31 until 6am on January 1. Services will run to a regular weekday schedule until midnight, with a special schedule for the rest of the morning. The first Vline train leaving Melbourne on each line on New Year’s Day is also free, regardless of time.
