Festa di Santa Giovanna
Saint Giovanna is celebrated throughout Italy for her rebellious spirit, with festivals across the country held in her name. And Thornbury's getting in on the celebrations too for the second year running with Festa di Santa Giovanna.
Thornbury Theatre will kick off the festivities on Monday with an inaugural Northside Charity Ball (benefitting Free to Feed), featuring live music from The Twoks and Horns of Leroy, plus a DJ set by Triple R presenter Fee B Squared. On the festa’s second night, Thornbury Picture House will screen the Italian-flavoured 1996 American comedy-drama Big Night.
On Wednesday the festa returns to its birthplace – Joanie’s Baretto. Owner Marco Finanzio (who also owns Umberto’s Espresso Bar just a few doors down) will host Stories From a Suitcase, an awards night for a local writing competition. The festa’s Saturday night celebration, Discoteca Grande (a “big dance” featuring live band Bella Ciao and sets from local DJs) will also be held at Joanie’s.
Sunday is all about food, with homemade Italian sausages from the Meat Room followed by desserts from Preston cafe Eat Cannoli. Then, in true Italian fashion, Santa Giovanna will be celebrated in a procession through the streets of Thornbury, with live music from Siesta Cartel.
