Fangirls at Arts Centre Melbourne
It’s a phase most of us go through at some point in our life: the belief that if we could only just meet our heroes, they’d reciprocate our love.
That’s the driving emotion behind Fangirls, an award-winning new musical at Arts Centre by Sydney-based playwright Yve Blake. Beginning life as an ode to her 14-year old self, Blake’s play is both a glimpse at the hysterics of fandom, as well as the way society differentiates the passion of female fans versus male fans.
Fangirls follows the story of Edna, who believes she can win the heart of the biggest pop star in the world, Harry. Featuring an album’s-worth of infectious pop tunes (also available as a soundtrack album), and real-life pop star-in-waiting Aydan, from The Voice, in its cast, Fangirls is as much a heart-thumping night out on the town as it is a comment on the ferocious power of female fandom.
Premiering at Queensland Theatre and a sell-out season at Belvoir earlier this year, the show has won numerous awards and drawn interest from US and UK producers. Covid-19 has put those plans on hold for the moment, so see it while you can in Melbourne.
