An Exhibition of Stars and Cars
What do Al Pacino, Kourtney Kardashian and Arnold Schwarzenegger have in common? Or Madonna and Bruce Lee? How about Chairman Mao and Coco Chanel? This isn’t the set-up for a strange joke – it’s a roll call of famous names who have conspicuously owned iconic models of Mercedes-Benz cars.
In a one-off, week-long exhibition from November 26 to December 1, Mercedes Me x Stars & Cars will display six cars from the brand’s celebrity-centric history – which has drawn in kings and presidents, popes and movie stars. The roster of famous owners includes Frank Sinatra, Kate Moss, Nelson Mandela, Freddie Mercury, Audrey Hepburn, Roger Federer, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Elton John, Grace Kelly, John Lennon, Sophia Loren and Michael Jackson.
Six of the most recognisable Mercedes-Benz vehicles will be displayed during the exhibition. These include a Bing Crosby-owned 300 S Cabriolet, a 1956 300 SL “Gullwing”, and a 600 Landaulet of the type famously used by Pope Paul VI (and Elvis Presley, by the by).
While you’re perusing this little piece of pop culture, you can sample wares from St Ali, who has created two bespoke menu items for the exhibition: the alcohol-free cocktail “Good Morning Grace Kelly” (elder-blossom-kombucha Mimosa with mandarin and grenadine) and for dessert, “Sophia’s Seduction” (Tasmanian leatherwood honey and soy panna cotta with honeycomb and summer berries).
Mercedes me has also commissioned Melbourne street artist Adnate to create a one-off artwork on the windows of the adjacent Rialto building during Stars & Cars. Guests will be able to watch Adnate work live throughout the week or view the completed piece in the weeks following the exhibition.
“The Stars & Cars exhibition is one of the most exciting events we’ve put on at Mercedes me to date,” says general manager Simon Johnson. “It’s an opportunity for us to showcase a number of extremely rare classics from Mercedes-Benz, and also to share stories of the celebrities, heads of state and rock stars – icons of their day – who have rubbed shoulders with our brand throughout the decades.”
Since launching in November 2017, 120,000 guests have visited the Mercedes me store.
