Various locations
Hear spoken word under planetarium stars, develop your craft at an all-day conference, be serenaded in the State Library, and more. Most of the festival’s 50 events are free.

Up-and-coming writers, rejoice: the Emerging Writers’ Festival returns for its 19th year with more than 150 storytellers and 50 in-person and digital events.

Over 11 days in June, the literary celebration will feature performances and professional development opportunities across the city, at the Wheeler Centre, State Library Victoria, Readings bookshop and more.

With more than 75 per cent of events free to access – and half of them accessible online – it’s easier than ever to take part. The hybrid format follows the success of the online festival in recent years.

Highlights this year include Writing the Stars, a screening and spoken word event at the Melbourne Planetarium; the National Writers’ Conference, taking place online and headlined by award-winning authors like Yassmin Abdel-Magied, Jennifer Down, Jamie Marina Lau and Jeanine Leane; Amazing Babes, which celebrates the people who have influenced and inspired local writers; and Bodies of Sound, where poets partner with musicians to create literary soundscapes at the State Library.

Plus, there are heaps more events aimed at fostering rising writing talent, connecting storytellers of all kinds, and assisting writers to improve their craft through workshops, pitching sessions and keynotes.
