DIVA at the Australian Museum of Performing Arts

Thu Dec 11, 2025 – Sun Apr 26, 2026

Australian Museum of Performing Arts, Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne

100 St Kilda Road, Southbank

An exclusive blockbuster exhibition celebrating the world’s most iconic performers launches Arts Centre Melbourne’s new museum of performing arts.

Arts Centre Melbourne is set to open the doors to a major new cultural destination this December: the Australian Museum of Performing Arts (AMPA). Its inaugural exhibition, DIVA – direct from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum – pulls out all the stops, spotlighting the world’s most provocative and powerful performers, from 19th-century opera stars to today’s global pop icons.

More than 250 objects grace the display, including 60 larger-than-life costumes alongside jewellery, photography, art and music. Expect a roll call of high-profile names like Whitney Houston, Cher, Prince, Tina Turner, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Billie Eilish, as well as homegrown legends Dame Joan Sutherland, Kylie Minogue, Olivia Newton-John, Cate Blanchett, Dame Edna Everage and Jessica Mauboy. Fashion houses including Bob Mackie, Maison Margiela, Vivienne Westwood, Dior and more also take the spotlight, bringing artistry into focus with sequins, feathers and couture that defined eras both on stage and the runway.

Australian stories shine, too, with rare treasures from the Australian Performing Arts Collection shown publicly for the first time. A sonic backdrop curated by internationally renowned sound designer Gareth Fry will also immerse visitors in the hits that made these stars unforgettable.

Running from December 11, 2025 to April 26, 2026, DIVA is more than an exhibition; it’s a love letter to performance.
