A high-octane musical reimagining of the sardonic teen classic is coming to the stage this month. Get ready for musical nostalgia (to the tunes of Britney, Nsync and the Goo Goo Dolls) and ice-cold comedy in the key of camp.

The outrageous antics and sociopathic seductions of 1999 cult teen thriller Cruel Intentions are taking the stage, with an indulgent throwback soundtrack and all the pitch-black comedy of the film.

Cruel Intentions: The ’90s Musical is coming to Australian shores for the first time after more than seven years of being performed internationally. From the West End to Broadway, the devious exploits of sexed-up Upper East Side step-siblings Kathryn and Sebastian have been enjoying a second life.

Laced with a ’90s greatest hits soundtrack that lets rip with the radio classics, this borderline-parody of the original film (which was, in turn, based on the controversial 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos) doesn’t shy away from its old-school charms. Unleashing classics from icons like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Boyz II Men, and Nsync – as well as hits like Bittersweet Symphony, Just a Girl, Kiss Me and Iris – this musical might be just the nostalgic escapism you’ve been yearning for.

The all-Australian cast features bright stars of the local theatre scene, including Kirby Burgess (Dirty Dancing, The Wedding Singer, Bring It On: The Musical), Drew Weston (Grease, Mary Poppins) and Euan Fistrovic Doidge (Les Misérables and Saturday Night Fever).
