Australia’s first exhibition dedicated to avant-garde fashion label Comme des Garçons opened at NGV International on November 1.
The free exhibition will showcase more than 65 outfits, drawn from more than 40 collections (including the gallery’s own), by the label’s the creative director and founder Rei Kawakubo.
The trailblazing designer launched the label in 1969 and Collecting Comme will explore her work from her first presentation in Paris in 1981 through the ’80s and ’90s, highlighting the experimental approach to construction and form, which produced the singular oversized and asymmetrical garments for which Comme des Garçons is revered.
There'll also be designs by two of Kawakubo's protégés, Junya Watanabe and Tao Kurihara.
In light of the pandemic, a free ticket is required to visit the NGV at this time.
From 10am to 5pm daily.
