Billie Justice Thomson: Big Show
It’s possible you know Adelaide-based artist Billie Justice Thomson’s nostalgic, kitsch food imagery from her past shows in Melbourne. Or you might’ve clocked her colourful designs on the walls at Brunswick Street Alimentari, The Prince of Wales Hotel, Billy van Creamy or a dozen other spots around the city.
The popular painter, illustrator and sign writer will be exhibiting – and selling – new pieces at Smith Street’s Modern Times Gallery in a new exhibition, Big Show, featuring pop-y oversized household objects, such as human-sized stationary, baguettes and bottles of sparkling San Pellegrino. It’s not a comment on consumerism; it’s an appreciation of the quirks and beauty of everyday minutiae.
Justice will also be painting something new on the Fitzroy furniture store and gallery’s front window.
Big Show opens on Thursday October 17 from 6pm to 8pm. There'll be complementary wine from Blackhearts & Sparrows and Sample Brew beers.
