Jerry Mai and Friends’ Summer Barbeque at Ocean Eight Winery
Beer hall Bia Hoi has been cooking up Vietnamese barbecues down at Mornington Peninsula winery Ocean Eight every weekend since November, and the summer pop-up is coming to an end in January.
But chef-owner Jerry Mai is making sure it ends with a bang, inviting some of her chef pals down for five-day barbeque over the January long weekend.
Former Masterchef contestants Sarah Tiong, Khanh Ong (The George on Collins) and Diana Chan, plus George Calombaris, are taking up the tongs and cooking smoky, charcoal-grilled delights in cook-offs against Mai.
On Friday and Saturday, Mai is working the grills solo for one last weekend, with Calombaris joining her on Sunday for a Greece versus Vietnam showdown of banh mis and souvlaki. In Praise of Veg cookbook author Alice Zaslavsky will be the master of ceremonies for the day.
On Monday, Masterchef alumnus Tiong is going head-to-head with Mai for a spicy battle of Southeast Asian flavours and dishes, with food writer Sofia Levin emceeing.
Finally, Mai takes a break on Tuesday as TV chefs (and real-life housemates) Chan and Ong face off in a cheeky battle of sambal cuttlefish versus suckling pig on a spit. Expect quips and banter, with the final dishes judged by Gary Mehigan.
Each dish comes with a suggested pairing from Ocean Eight's range of wines; the brightness and acidity of the wines complement the summery, punchy flavours from the barbie.
