Better in Bread by Beast CBD

Some exciting Melbourne venues – including Hi Fi, Warkop and Sloppy Joe’s Deli – are getting into bread together every Thursday in June for carby collabs. Stretchy pants recommended.

The team behind Section 8 and Ferdydurke has brought its Brunswick East burger joint The B.East to the CBD, and now they’ve rounded up some Melbourne hospo pals for an alliance united by a common love interest: bread.

Every Thursday in June, the Beast CBD is unveiling a new one-day-only menu of crowd-pleasing collabs that bring on all the carbs. It started with reubens and a conti roll from the Hi Fi gang on June 2, but there’s more heart-stopping decadence to come.

Expect raunchy renditions like Thai croissants in massaman beef, green curry chicken, Thai milk tea and pandan flavours (plus salted egg yolk, coconut cream and taro latte doughnuts) from cult Instagram bakery Laantaan, paired with a Birria cheesesteak dipped in Wagyu beef consomme from the Beast kitchen on June 9.

One June 16, Sloppy Joe’s Deli is making its way into the CBD from Bentleigh, with a craggy fried chicken bap roll and fluffy doughnuts, matched with the Beast’s smoked pork Cubano.

Bringing the heat on June 23, Indonesian sandwich deli Warkop will be serving beef pastrami rendang sandwiches and turmeric chicken schnitzel rolls alongside a Beast Biscoff special.

Rounding out the menu on June 30, Carlton pub The Lincoln is making pressed brisket and cured pigs head ciabattas while 196 Below’s Dessertopia takes the cake for a creation symbolic of the bittersweet end to the carb campaign: a vegemite dessert with burnt butter sponge, vegemite mousse, chocolate ganache and salted caramel. For those without the acquired taste, there’s a fairy bread cake and PB&J creation, too. And with truffle season on the horizon, the Beast team is making vego truffle katsu sandos with plant-based schnitzel on shokupan.

Available from noon each week, dishes from the collabs are first come, first served until sold out.
