Bake Sale for Foodbank Victoria by Big Cake at Her Melbourne
You don’t need an excuse to eat cake, pastries and other sweets, but it’s always nice to have one. This weekend, members of Melbourne’s food community give you just that at the Food Sale for Foodbank Victoria. It’s on the second floor at Her Melbourne this Sunday, November 19.
The bakers will all be there in person. There’ll be one-off baked goods like a cherry Danish with fig leaf from Charlie Duffy of Small Batch; sheet cake from Jessamie Holmes of Thy Caketh, whose highly decorated bakes were recently featured in the New York Times; and even a collab between cookbook author Julia Busuttil Nishimura and Julie head chef Stephannie Liu, who are teaming to make Seville orange shortbreads with wild fennel buttercream.
The superstar line-up also includes Raymond Tan of Raya, Helly Raichura of Enter Via Laundry, Patti Chimkire of Mali Bakes, Zee Scott (aka the British Celebrant) and Gareth Whitton of Tarts Anon.
The event is hosted by Big Cake, a new food brand with a name that loosely nods to BDE, the concept of “big business” and a Taylor Swift lyric.
The team was inspired by the community bake sales hosted by Brooklyn pastry chef Natasha Pickowicz for Planned Parenthood. It hopes this will be the first of many food events that use food, gathering and connection to support the community.
Broadsheet Melbourne’s food and drink editor Audrey Payne is helping organise this event.
