Bake Sale for Foodbank at Hyphen Spaces
In August, Foodbank Victoria held its first emergency food drive since the 2019–2020 bushfires – the hunger relief charity was running “dangerously low” on food.
On Sunday October 6, a group of Melbourne chefs – including Natalie Paull of Beatrix, John Rivera of Askal and Tom Sarafian – are holding a bake sale to raise funds for the charity that feeds 65,000 people daily.
The event is at chef Steve Chan’s Hyphen Spaces, a retail space next to Chan’s Carlton North venue Sleepy’s. Participating chefs, including Patchanida Chimkire of Mali Bakes and Jack Muir-Rigby of Masses Bagels, will contribute special items for the bake sale.
Tickets are sold out, but there will be a very limited number of products available to purchase on the day including chocolate from Hunted & Gathered and drinks from Mateo Soda. Proceeds (less the cost of ingredients) go directly to Foodbank.
The bake sale is organised by chef Stephannie Liu (ex-Julie) and Broadsheet Melbourne food and drink editor Audrey Payne. The duo was inspired by the community bake sales hosted by Brooklyn pastry chef Natasha Pickowicz for Planned Parenthood.
