The Australian Ballet Celebration Gala

Thu 9th December, 2021 – Sat 18th December, 2021
State Theatre, Arts Centre Melbourne
100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne
Price: $75
The acclaimed ballet company returns to the stage with excerpts from classical pieces and contemporary shows, including The Nutcracker and George Balanchine’s Serenade.

It’s been a start-stop 18 months for The Australian Ballet, but its Celebration Gala in Melbourne is a triumphant return after the city’s sixth lockdown, and also marks the company’s first show back at the Arts Centre Melbourne’s State Theatre in nearly two years.

There are excerpts from both classical showpieces and more contemporary works, including from the shows that were cancelled in 2021. George Balanchine’s Serenade – originally intended to be part of New York Dialects – will be performed, as well as a performance from Watermark. William Forsythe’s Artifact Suite was performed in Sydney last year, and an excerpt is making its way to Melbourne for the gala. Dancers will also perform the Black Swan pas de deux from Swan Lake, and the Dance of the Snow Fairies from The Nutcracker is closing out the show.
