Over two Saturdays in winter, the esteemed regional gallery comes alive at night with an after-hours exhibition viewing, live music and a Latin American feed.

After-hours gallery parties are always popular in summer, but who says we can’t enjoy them over the cooler months?

Art Late is a series of late-night weekend events at the Art Gallery of Ballarat combining art, music, food and drinks, and set against the backdrop of the gallery’s dreamy, pink-hued exhibition Lost in Palms Springs. The exhibition brings together 14 artists, photographers and thinkers from the US and Australia who have responded to the landscape and modern architecture of the desert resort city in California. Artists featured include architecture photographer Tom Blachford and fine art photographer Kate Ballis.

The event series – curated by contemporary art and music events group OK Motels – kicked off in May with a live performance by popular country group the Slingers. If you missed out, there are two more dates to look forward to. On June 15, five-piece Melbourne band Bananagun will take the stage with its psychedelic, electric and eclectic sound. Then, on July 13, Brisbane quintet Nice Biscuit will perform a swirling blend of krautesque rhythms, powerful dual vocals and heavily modulated guitar tones.

Local Latin American eatery Pancho will be serving a California-inspired supper on both evenings. On the drinks front there’ll be cocktails by Itinerant Spirits and wine by Blue Pyrenees Estate.

Tickets for Art Late x OK Motels: Bananagun (June 15) and Art Late x OK Motels: Nice Biscuit (July 13) are available now. Art Late runs monthly, with more dates to be announced soon. The exhibition Lost in Palm Springs is on now until September 1; regular daytime entry is free.
