A new experimental film explores the disappearance of a lake, from the lake’s own perspective.

Since debuting in 2019, experimental film and video art platform Prototype has established itself as a home for cutting edge visual art. Now it’s teamed up with ACMI for the premiere of Brown Lake, the most recent work by internationally acclaimed Australian filmmaker Samantha Lang.

Narrated by AFI-winning actress Mia Wasikowska, Brown Lake is an eco-thriller set on North Stradbroke Island that explores the disappearance of the titular lake’s water from the viewpoint of the lake itself.

Screening on April 27, it’s the latest presentation of ACMI’s ART+FILM program, which showcases significant short and feature-length works by leading Australian and international creators. Also showing as part of the presentation are two works of eco cinema from Prototype’s archive: Lithic Coda from UK-based Sam Smith and Picnic Places from Canberra documentary-maker Robert Nugent.

Following the screening Lang will take part in a panel discussion hosted by Prototype curator Lauren Carrol Harris.
