Arab Film Festival at Cinema Nova
The 14th Arab Film Festival returns to Melbourne next week with a program highlighting untold stories of generations of Arab women and the prejudices they face.
Opening the festival is MAHBAS (Solitaire), a romantic comedy about a Lebanese woman who holds a grudge against Syrians after her brother was killed by a bomb and then discovers her daughter’s future in-laws are Syrian.
The mix of feature films and short films comes from Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Jordan and Iraq. There is also a film called Gaza Surf Club, a documentary about young boys and girls who use surfing to escape life in the tumultuous Gaza Strip.
