After a long closure for renovations, ACMI finally returns with a weekend of free events. It’s been nearly two years since Melbourne’s beloved ACMI closed the doors on its Federation Square home. Now completely transformed following extensive renovations, the centre for all things video and visual is inviting Melbourne to celebrate its return, with a blockbuster weekend of activities, eclectic events and performances.

Across Saturday February 20 and Sunday February 21, the museum will host an eclectic range of free events. They include the Pre-Cinema Making Room, which encourages visitors to make an animated film the old-fashioned way by creating a flipbook, and AO Tennis on the big screen, where you can show off your virtual court skills with a Fast Four doubles match on both the Atrium screen at Federation Square and the large cinema screen at ACMI itself. Fans also have the chance to win giveaways of the AO Tennis 2 game.

A range of talks across the weekend aims to showcase the work that goes on behind the scenes at ACMI. They include Meet the Curators, which sees the team responsible for new centrepiece exhibition Story of the Moving Image discuss its creation.

Live performance is a big part of ACMI and the opening weekend launches the Personal Response series, where artists respond to a key work or image within the Story of the Moving Image exhibit. It kicks-off with performances from activist, writer, performer, musician and radical mischief-maker Candy Bowers.

On Sunday, look out for live pop-up performances of Stairs on Screen, a salute by choreographer Dana Jolly to some of the most iconic stair-focused dance routines captured on the silver screen. For more information, or to book free tickets, visit here
