Zoo Twilights has announced its 2018 program. The annual not-for-profit concert series will take place at Melbourne Zoo every weekend from January 26 until March 10.

American singer-songwriter and pianist Ben Folds, performing at the Zoo on February 16, is the first artist to be announced. His set will be broken up into two parts; the second half will offer fans the chance to request their favourite songs, with a unique song-selection process.

During the Paper Aeroplane Request set, Folds will ask fans of his band, Ben Folds Five, to write their favourite tunes on paper and launch them onto the stage. If you really want to hear your favourite jam, it’s advised you include more folds than Ben has band members in your design, to avoid a nosedive.

Supporting Folds will be UK indie-folk singer and guitarist Lucy Rose.

Proceeds from the all-ages Zoo Twilight shows will go towards Zoos Victoria’s efforts fighting the extinction of the 21 most at-risk species in Victoria, such as the eastern barred bandicoot. To date, the Zoo has bred more than 650 bandicoots and hopes to continue this work with contributions from the festival.

Tickets for Zoo Twilights will go on sale to the public on Tuesday October 25. Those signed up for line-up news will be able to buy pre-sale tickets on Wednesday October 18, when the full 2018 season line-up will be announced.
