Imagine entering a mysterious, dream-like space, then being aggressively moved or tenderly embraced, or abandoned, by a stranger.
These disarming scenarios are just some of the experiences you’ll encounter at ALONE – an immersive show coming to Melbourne in February.
ALONE, created in Los Angeles in 2013, is designed to challenge and explore human emotion.
In Melbourne, that will involved a 45-minute walkthrough event, THE / / / / / SEQUENCE, beginning on Valentine’s Day.
Co-creators Devon Paulson and Lawrence Lewis had been artistic collaborators for two decades, with a heavy focus on music, sound design, performance, installation and fine art. But they wanted to create something for audiences that gave them a more direct and distinct artistic experience.
The pair was lured to Melbourne by Jerome Borazio, the man behind St. Jerome’s and Laneway Festival, who experienced ALONE on a trip to L.A. and approached the creators about bringing the concept to Australia. Borazio has worked closely with the Paulson and Lewis for two years on the project.

Having never shown ALONE outside America, the creators wanted to find a city that would embrace and understand the experience. They tested the waters with a show in Melbourne last October, and reception prompted this full-scale staging.
Broadsheet and Alone are giving away five double passes to the opening night on Wednesday February 14 at 10.30pm. The competition runs from Jan 12 to Jan 29.
