We’re sad to report on the news that musician David Bowie has died at 69.

His death comes just days after his birthday and the release of his latest album, Blackstar.

A statement on his official Facebook page reads:

“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief”.

The hugely influential artist was to be honoured with a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York on March 31, featuring the Roots, Cyndi Lauper and the Mountain Goats. Bowie also has a musical, Lazarus, currently running Off Broadway.

Many of us will be feeling grateful to have shared the incredible insight into Bowie's life that came to us courtesy of the David Bowie Is... exhibition at ACMI last year.

The exhibition was a colourful, immersive trip through Bowie’s life, covering his trajectory from fame-hungry teenager to global cultural phenomenon, through to weird pop’s elder statesman.

He is survived by his family, and will be missed by millions.

A tweet today from David's son, Duncan.
