Update: Blood Orange has cancelled his set at Melbourne's Sugar Mountain. The Avalanches, Spank Rock (DJ set), Young Tapz and HABITS have been added.

The Sugar Mountain 2017 line-up is here, and the festival of music, art and food again presents a surprising, crate-digging mix of the big names, the new and the overlooked.

The big news here is that Sugar Mountain will be Blood Orange’s only Melbourne show. His new album Freetown Sound is a smooth, accomplished and often furious record, and it’ll translate into a summer festival highlight of a live set.

The other big draws include German techno legend Pantha du Prince, local heroes Big Scary and the always-captivating My Disco. But the stuff in between is just as worthy of your attention:

Moses Sumney’s electro-folk croon has turned heads with eerily beautiful stuff such as new single Lonely World, (it’s like a cross between the best of D’Angelo and James Blake, soaked in honey).

Beppe Loda is an Italian synth veteran who honed his craft in his home country’s legendary club scene in the 1980s. It’s an infectious blend of Brazilian, rare groove, blaxploitation, obscure jazz and fusion.

Weyes Blood makes retro-tinged psych-folk that calls back to forgotten psych classics such as Linda Perhacs, but still sounds utterly personal and real.

Of course Sugar Mountain isn’t just music. There’s also a healthy offering of art to break up the journey between stages. This year’s highlights include a fascinating sounding collaboration between Canadian Robyn Moody and American Caroline Polachek, which promises to be a giant, interactive harp made of lasers; UK collective Supergroup London is building an elaborate entrance to the festival, including a working camera obscura; and in Melbourne-based artist Caleb Shea’s new work, “transcendental geometric abstraction and blunt simplicity meet in a newly charged revision of the late-modernist sculptural tradition”, which means that he’s making some interesting sculptures.

The line-up of food trucks are yet to be announced, although the return of the Sensory Restaurant is confirmed, with details to come. It’s a grand summer’s day out.
