The Mornington Peninsula’s most extensive food, wine and music gathering is back for a second year.
The 2016 Peninsula Picnic has a bigger line-up in store than this year’s event: ARIA Award-winning artist Missy Higgins will headline the day, her soulful tunes perfect for the country harvest atmosphere. Blues-and-roots soloist Kim Churchill, Darren Middleton (ex- Powderfinger guitarist), rising Adelaide indie-folk star, Timberwolf and Shoreham local singer-songwriter Ruby Whiting will also play throughout the day.
The picnic will have a larger site at Mornington Racecourse this year, making room for more cooking from local chefs and restaurants, regional produce and wine – and you. "There will be plenty more room for picnic space," says creative director Dave Strong. "Last year got a little tight, so we have increased the site to make it more comfortable for everyone ... and more people will be able to attend, too."
There will be 12 restaurants on site-and they’ve outdone themselves this year. Restaurants range from the Terminus at The Flinders Hotel to Paringa Estate. There will also be Melbourne favourite Pope Joan and executive chef from the European, Ian Curley. And if that’s not enough-DOC Mornington will be there too. Organisers have also increased the number of wineries from five to seven.
In addition to the restaurants and wineries, some 20-plus local producers will give you the chance to add a little something to your picnic basket. Strong says attendees, "Can graze on produce from local farmers, getting to sample cheese, fresh strawberries, jams and chutneys and the like."
Picnickers can also browse handcrafted goods from a carefully curated list of local artists, showcasing the best in local art, jewellery, homewares, fashion and photography.
The day is a sunny sampler of the best the Peninsula has to offer, all set against rustic hand-crafted bars and stations designed by local artists.
