This competition is now closed. Winners will be selected on July 29.
That rustling sound you hear across Melbourne every July isn't the sound of fallen leaves flying. It's what happens when thousands of film fans start thumbing through the pages of the stacked Melbourne International Film Festival program.
Every winter, we escape the cold for two solid weeks of movie-going, taking in new releases, restored and long-forgotten classics, and the highlights from Cannes and Sundance. With international headliners, music documentaries, coming-of-age stories for teens, and local up-and-comers, curating your MIFF experience is a big job, and the choices can be overwhelming – in the best way possible.
This year we're giving three readers the chance to win some major MIFF prizes. Here's what's on offer:
MIFF Passport Double Pass
We're not exaggerating when we say a Festival Passport is the hottest commodity during MIFF. It gives its bearer unlimited entry to as many films as they can squeeze in, and is usually available exclusively to MIFF Members. Not only could you win one, but we'll throw in a second so you can bring a friend along on your MIFF mission. Once you've scoured the program, made your selections and put in a leave request with the boss to make time to fit them all in, you can start booking sessions. Tickets need to pre-booked to secure a seat at all standard screenings during the festival.
Opening Night Gala Double Pass
A second winner will score a Double Pass to MIFF's opening-night screening of The Australian Dream, the highly publicised documentary chronicling the final years of Adam Goodes's AFL career. A hero of the game – with two Brownlow Medals, two Swans premierships and an Australian of the Year award to his name – Goodes was the target of ugly and largely unquestioned racism during his final years on the field, and the effects of that abuse led him to leave the game for good in 2015. Written by award-winning journalist Stan Grant, The Australian Dream is a must-see film about racial dynamics in Australia, and you'll see it at the world premiere, where you'll walk the red carpet alongside filmmakers and special guests – including Adam's younger brother Brett Goodes (who plays for the Western Bulldogs), his former teammate Michael O'Loughlin and his coach Paul Roos. Following the screening you and a guest can head to the VIP afterparty.
Closing Night Gala Double Pass
After first making a name for herself as a rapper, Awkwafina has since gone on to steal scenes alongside Hollywood A-listers in Oceans 8 and Crazy Rich Asians. In The Farewell she proves she’s much more than just the comic relief. Directed by Lulu Wang, MIFF's closing-night film was the talk of Sundance for its emotional story about a Chinese-American woman returning to Changchun and preparing to say goodbye to her dying grandmother, who's unaware she has terminal cancer. Following the screening you and a friend can wrap up MIFF for another year with one final party.
To be in the running to win one of the three prizes, all you need to do is enter your details below. The competition closes on Monday July 29.
