Melbourne’s newest rooftop cinema is also a drive-in.

The Backlot Rooftop Drive-in opens Boxing Day and with two state-of-the-art screens will show films seven days a week – with Melbourne’s skyline for a view.

“Everyone has a fondness and affinity for the drive-in, so hopefully we can re-spark and reinvent that in our own little way,” says Backlot co-founder Mark D’Angelo. “We thought it would be such a fantastic opportunity to bring a vintage retro concept of cinema to the Melbourne CBD.”

The movie program will be released within a week.

The Docklands cinema will fit 130 cars (65 for each screen), but also has ‘blue-deck’ seating area for people who come without a vehicle.

As for food, Backlot will host a variety of food trucks, though the line-up is yet to be announced. There will also be a candy bar stocked with popcorn and choc-tops.

“To be able to watch the latest films surrounded by stars and the city lights – we hope it’ll be a wonderful experience for Melburnians,” D’Angelo says.

The Backlot Rooftop Drive-In is in the Harbour Town Precinct, 90 Waterfront Way, Docklands.
