Sydneysiders have been in the room where it happens – specifically the Lyric Theatre – to watch award-winning musical Hamilton since it opened in March 2021.

But Melburnians will also get their shot. It’s looking likely the award-winning Broadway show is making its way here in 2022.

It was announced on Wednesday that Disney film-turned-stage-musical Mary Poppins is opening at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in May 2022, taking over from Hamilton.

Tickets to Hamilton are currently available through to December, with speculation that it’ll end its run in March, after a full year.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports it’ll be opening in Her Majesty’s Theatre, from as early as March 2022. A spokesperson for the production declined to comment on the rumour for Broadsheet, but says an announcement (of unspecified nature) will be made at the end of the month.

If true, it’ll be the latest addition to Melbourne’s string of blockbuster musicals and stage plays, following the return of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in February; heartwarming September 11 story Come From Away, which ended its run in March; Frozen the Musical, which ends its run in Sydney this weekend to open here next month; and Moulin Rouge! The Musical, set to open in August.

Hamilton broke box office records when it opened in Sydney, with sold-out shows and standing ovations in its first two months. The musical was written by composer, lyricist and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda. It’s won 11 Tony Awards, including best musical, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Grammy Award for best musical theatre album for its modern blend of hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap and R’n’B.
