The state government has announced a massive city-wide festival celebrating New York City that will coincide with the National Gallery of Victoria’s Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition MoMA at NGV: 130 Years of Modern and Contemporary Art.
Named MEL&NYC, the festival hopes to celebrate the cultural connections between Melbourne and the Big Apple with a program of comedy, music, food, dance and writing.
On Thursday, Ilana Glazer, the co-creator and co-star of hit show Broad City, was announced as the headline act of the festival.
Glazer will feature on a line-up that also includes singer Regina Spektor. The music of New York City will also be celebrated at NGV Friday Nights with a program of jazz-inflected acts co-curated by the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. There will also be a series of secret pop-up gigs in Melbourne’s laneways showcasing the city’s underground music scene. The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will perform a suite of works by celebrated composer Leonard Bernstein, too.
Elsewhere the line-up features a series of culinary residencies, including a collaboration between David Chang’s acclaimed restaurant Momofuku Ko and Marion, Andrew McConnell’s Gertrude Street wine bar. Beloved Russell Street natural-wine bar Embla will host the team from Brooklyn’s The Four Horsemen, which is owned by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem fame. There’s also a swath of events hosted by the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, and a hot-dog-eating competition at Lunar Park.
New York City’s iconic on-screen presence will be celebrated in film screenings at the Astor, and at Cult Cinema events at the Brunswick Mechanics Institute. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ronan Farrow, whose series of stories in the New Yorker helped expose the sexual misconduct of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, will also host a talk.
There’s a lot to take in here, but boy does it look good.
MEL&NYC runs from June to August 2018.
