Wait for It no longer.

After much speculation, the producers of smash-hit musical Hamilton have confirmed it will open in Melbourne next year.

Sydneysiders have been in The Room Where It Happens – specifically the Lyric Theatre – to watch the award-winning show since it opened in March, but Melburnians will also get their shot at Her Majesty’s Theatre from March 16, 2022.

Telling the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton, it’s had a profound impact on culture, politics and education since it hit Broadway in 2015. And it broke box-office records when it opened in Sydney, with sold-out shows and standing ovations in the first two months.

The musical was written by composer, lyricist and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda. It’s won 11 Tony Awards (including best musical), the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Grammy Award for best musical-theatre album for its modern blend of hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap and R’n’B.

It’s the latest addition to Melbourne’s string of blockbuster musicals and stage plays, following the return of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in February; heartwarming September 11 story Come From Away, which ended its run in March; Frozen the Musical, which recently finished up its Sydney season and is slated to open here this month; and Moulin Rouge! The Musical, set to open in August.

Hamilton opens at Her Majesty’s Theatre on March 16, 2022. Pre-sale tickets go on sale here at 10am on June 24; general-release tickets on July 19.
