Getting a surf in over the weekend will become a lot easier when surf park Urbnsurf opens near Melbourne Airport in early 2019.

This is far from Bells Beach, but the new MCG-sized development is aimed at surfers of any skill level, and uses a leading wave-generating technology developed in Spain called Wavegarden to pump out 1000 two-metre high waves every hour.

LED lighting will allow visitors to surf day and night, whether you’re on a shortboard, longboard, bodyboard, kneeboard or stand-up paddleboard.

In addition to the 2.1-hectare lagoon and surfing academy, there will be a food and beverage precinct, skate ramps, playgrounds, rock-climbing and mountain-bike pump tracks.

Construction on the $28.3 million development, located next to Essendon Football Club, is well underway. Urbnsurf Melbourne hopes to be pumping out its first waves by the end of 2018.

Urbnsurf parks are also due to open in Sydney and Perth.
