Set on a sandy hill between the Murray and Goulburn rivers, Cape Horn Vineyard is a peaceful riverside spot to while away a Sunday looking over the Murray. The scent of eucalyptus is prominent on the drive in, along with the sweetness of the various fruit trees dotting the 130-acre property.

Shiraz was first planted here in the late 1800s, but today there are 20 acres of chardonnay, marsanne, zinfandel and durif vines as well.

The grapes are grown on the property, while the wine is made over at Hanging Rock Winery in Woodend. At the cellar door, you can taste your way through a selection of recent and older vintages before settling in with a glass of your favourite and a woodfired pizza from the outdoor oven. The kitchen also serves cheese platters you can enjoy on the sprawling lawn.

There are swings and games of giant chess to distract the kids, and accommodation on-site if you’d like to stay the night. On weekends, the vineyard hosts live music events that draw a crowd.

The vineyard is a 18-kilometre drive east of Echuca, or 30 minutes upstream if you’re coming by boat.
