Goose

While studying visual merchandising in Melbourne, Kristen Murphy noticed there were very few contemporary retail spaces in her hometown of Geelong. Within three months of this epiphany she’d opened her own. Goose arrived in 1996.

Goose is a collection of all the things she loves. The store is split into different sections, showcasing clothes, homewares, men’s giftware, cards and shoes. Those searching for gifts that look a little bit special, search no further. Gift-wrapping is a major part of the business, so much so that Goose has created its own paper.

Clothes are selected in line with forthcoming trends. Mostly, they’re utilitarian, designed to be layered and worn every day. Different textures and natural fibres give the clothes a relaxed vibe. Goose likes supporting Australian producers but doesn’t shy away from international brands.

Staple labels include Mesop, Anna Hoffman, Elk, James Jeans and Spanish label Yerse. The smaller fashionistas aren’t forgotten either – Goose also has kids’ clothes.

Murphy likes to keep things evolving. The design allows the whole shop to be switched around on a whim. Plywood, steel and a large peg board make up the bare bones of the store; all the colour comes from the products themselves.
