A fire and subsequent explosion at a Richmond substation this afternoon has resulted in major delays on Melbourne’s train lines.

Metro Trains has announced significant delays for some outbound services through Richmond and Burley, in particular the Alamein, Belgrave, Lilydale and Glen Waverley lines.

According to the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), firefighters arrived at the Mary Street, Richmond, Electrical Terminal Station at 4.12pm after receiving several calls. The explosion could also be heard at the MFB Training Complex in Burnley Street.

There are approximately 1000 litres of oil within the site, which is on fire. MFB is waiting until the power has been confirmed as isolated before attacking the fire.
