A section of Hoddle Street will close for a week in January causing major traffic delays. VicRoads has said drivers can expect to add up to an hour, or more, to trips in the area.

The road will be closed from 12.30am on January 7 to 11.30pm on January 14 between the Eastern Freeway and Victoria Parade.

“Shutting down a section of Hoddle Street isn’t a decision we take lightly – but it’ll allow construction crews to get the best start to this project during school holidays and spare drivers from three months of ongoing closures,” Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said in a statement.

Serious delays are also expected on the Eastern Freeway because drivers will be pushed on to Alexandra Parade. This will have the flow-on effect of increased traffic in Melbourne’s inner north, particularly on Smith, Brunswick and Nicholson Streets.

Swan Street and Bridge Road in Richmond will likely be affected. The Swan Street bridge redevelopment is likely to create another blockage.

When Hoddle Street reopens, a lane each way will remain closed while minor works are completed. At this stage an extra lane on the Eastern Freeway will be nearing completion.
