A collaborative research project has revealed nearly one million tonnes of food is wasted in Melbourne each year.
The study by Foodprint Melbourne found individuals produces an average of 207 kilograms of food waste per year, which is enough to feed an extra two million people. Foodprint estimates it costs Melbourne households an average of more than $2200 a year – $3.5 million dollars in total.
“[Food waste] represents a waste of 3.6 million hectares of land and 180 gigalitres of water,” the report states. It also generates 2.5 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
Melbourne University researcher Seona Candy told the Age it’s the first report to quantify Melbourne’s food waste. Strategies to reduce food waste at home includes making meal plans, sharing leftover food with friends or neighbours, checking the fridge before going shopping, and storing food correctly.
