Today (November 27, 2017) Planning Minister Richard Wynne approved plans for the construction of the West Gate Tunnel. The state government believes it will relieve congestion on the West Gate Freeway.
Expected to cost $5.5 billion, the tunnel and toll road will run between Yarraville and West Melbourne.
The government will comply with the requests of residents on Hyde Street in Yarraville to have their properties bought out.
Residents in Brooklyn were also concerned about the noise from extra trucks using the road. Minister Wynne has said he will work with residents on Millers Road, some of whom will have their homes double-glazed.
A noise wall will be installed in Altona North to protect residents from traffic noise.
Wurundjeri Way in Docklands will be lowered and V/Line stabling yards will be relocated as part of the project.
As reported by the Age, the tunnel was pitched to the Andrews government by Transurban, which will pay $3.8 billion of the price tag. It is believed in return the Andrews government will extend Transurban’s right to charge tolls on CityLink for a further 12 years. Currently Transurban’s CityLink contract is due to expire in 2035.
Each tree removed for the project will be replaced by five more plantings. The Andrews government says it will also improve cycling and pedestrian connections between Docklands and North Melbourne.
The Andrews government and Transurban are currently aiming for a 2018 start.
