If you’re heading to Melbourne Airport after 7pm on Thursday or Friday nights this week, make sure to plan ahead. The Tullamarine Freeway will be closed in both directions, between the M80 Ring Road and the Calder Freeway, on Thursday 12 and Friday 13 January from 7pm to 6.30am.

VicRoads is advising people travelling to or from the airport to add an extra 30 minutes travel time to their trip.

The freeway shutdown is taking place so that workers can lift beams over the road for the new English Street bridge between Airport West and Essendon Fields. (The new bridge will be wider and longer to allow room for two new lanes on the Tullamarine Freeway, and new lanes on the bridge itself). The freeway already closed for two days last week – a record closure time for a Melbourne freeway.

If you’re travelling to the airport on Thursday or Friday nights, the main detour (excluding trucks) is via Pascoe Vale Road and the M80 Ring Road. Another detour (including trucks) is via the Calder Freeway, Keilor Park Drive and Sharps Road.

If you're leaving the airport, or going to the city, you can take Airport Drive, Keilor Park Drive and the Calder Freeway or Tullamarine Freeway to the M80 Ring Road and Calder Freeway.

If you’re driving to Essendon Fields or Airport West, Wirraway Road will be open during the Tullamarine closure via Melrose Drive.

A slate of summer closures are hitting major roads in January before traffic levels ramp up again in February.
