At the end of May we thought we’d put this story to bed. Surely after new safety measures were installed in front of South Melbourne’s Montague Street Bridge, trucks would stop slamming into it week in, week out?
We were wrong. Just before 11am today, a truck wedged itself under the bridge.
Despite warning signs, a new gantry with low-hanging reflective paddles, and guaranteed public embarrassment, a truck driver still chose to challenge physics by attempting to drive through solid matter.
The bridge has been a menace for decades, but only recently did it become a media phenomenon. There’s now a website dedicated to counting the days since it was last hit, and it has not one but two tribute accounts on social media.
