A major traffic jam has developed on Racecourse Road in Flemington after a truck took down overhead tramlines on the CityLink overpass at about 7am.

The jam extends five kilometres between Royal Parade and Ascot Vale Road. The Age is reporting “North Melbourne is in gridlock”.

All westbound lanes heading towards Flemington Racecourse are closed, as is the inbound on ramp to CityLink.

City-bound drivers are being advised to head towards Kensington and outbound drivers to take Mount Alexander Road.

The route 57 tram is being diverted via Mount Alexander Road and Ascot Vale Road. Commuters can take the 404 bus to connect with the 57 and 59 tram lines at Moonee Ponds Junction.
