Tens of thousands of Australian students skipped school and university on Friday to hit the streets of their local cities today for the School Strike 4 Climate protests.
The protests began at 10am across the country. The Melbourne protest attracted enormous crowds, blocking access to Collins and Spring Streets, and affecting all tram lines that operate through the area.
As reported by the Herald Sun, two groups of youths were seen on high-rise buildings neighbouring the protest, forcing police to intervene.
The 86 and 96 tram routes will now run via La Trobe Street between Spencer Street and Melbourne Museum. Routes 11, 12 and 109 are also being diverted via La Trobe Street. Route 48 is being diverted via Flinders Street. To accommodate the disruption, PTV has also organised a shuttle service between Elizabeth Street and Victoria Harbour Docklands.
The strike is set to finish around 2pm, but it’s unclear when services will return to normal.
