A slate of road works is scheduled for two of Melbourne’s busiest roads this summer: the West Gate and Tullamarine freeways.

The closures – part of the CityLink Tulla Widening project – will significantly affect people driving to and from the airport in December and January, VicRoads announced today.

The Tullamarine Freeway will be closed in both directions between the Calder Freeway and M80 Ring Road from 10pm on January 5 to 10am on January 8.

Also affecting airport traffic will be the closure of the English Street bridge over the Tullamarine Freeway (it’s being rebuilt) from 7am on January 3 to 12pm on January 25 .

Meanwhile, the West Gate Bridge will have three outbound lanes closed from 7pm on Boxing Day to 3pm on December 28 for maintenance. Drivers will be detoured via Wurundjeri Way, Docklands and Footscray Road.

The Montague Street exit on the West Gate Freeway will be closed to inbound traffic from 8pm on December 26 to 5am on January 13, and drivers will need to exit via Lorimer Street instead.

More disruptions will hit Melbourne’s west in the New Year. Shepherd Bridge in Footscray will be closed from 8pm on January 6 to 5.30am on January 9 for widening and strengthening.

For all these closures, detours will be put in place, but VicRoads says to plan ahead.

“We know these works mean delays, but they are crucial to unlocking some of the most significant choke points on our roads,” says Luke Donnellan, Minister for Roads and Road Safety.

“While every effort is being made to minimise the impact on motorists, we encourage drivers to consider alternate routes or modes of transport, plan their journey and to allow extra time.”
