A new, nightmarish-sounding “P-turn” will replace right turns at certain intersections on Punt Road and Hoddle Street.

How it works: you drive straight through the intersection, then you make a U-turn and a left.

Sounds simple, until you find yourself on Punt Road. In peak hour. And you realise you didn’t pick the correct lane 20 metres in advance like you were supposed to.

This is part of a major $60 million upgrade to ease the road’s notoriously bad traffic congestion. A major part of the upgrade plan is to install four continuous-flow intersections along the road – a design that eliminates left and right turns at main junctions. A parking ban along the entire length of Punt Road is also due to start at the end of this month.

The Age reports P-turns were first introduced in 2009 to reduce congestion at the intersection of Cranbourne Road and Moorooduc Highway in Frankston. This will be the first time the turn has been trialled in inner-city Melbourne.

Construction will begin on the new intersection layouts in mid-2017 and, according to the Herald Sun, will take two years to complete.
