There have been 10,000 submissions since the competition opened two days ago, with "Aboriginal names, AFL greats and Game of Thrones references featuring strongly so far" a spokesperson for the Melbourne Metro Rail Authority (MMRA) said.
Metro Rail has given Broadsheet a selection of the public's submissions so far, and they range from the ridiculous to the serious to the banal.
Suggestions for the CBD North station include Winterfell (apt) and Kath & Kim Station, as well as the more simple, New York-y Uptown. Anyone thinking of voting for the latter should remember Uptown Girl is a really annoying song.
If you’re thinking of giving your vote to the Game of Thrones option, remember this will make Cr Robert Doyle King in the North. Vote carefully, Melbourne. (Also playing Name of Thrones didn’t go very well for a Geelong property developer recently.)
It’s been a miserable year for North Melbourne supporters but clearly they haven’t all jumped ship yet: someone wants the currently named Arden station to be changed to Shinboner station.
In addition to Arden and CBD North, new stations are being built at Parkville, Domain and under Swanston Street. These working titles have also been includes in numerous submissions, the MRRA said.
You can submit your suggestion online until October 22. Submissions will be assessed by an advisory panel and reduced to a shortlist of appropriate names, which the government will then consider.
This likely means only sensible suggestions will remain contenders. Anyone hoping for a Stationy McStationface should abandon that dream now.
The winner of the station-naming competition will get an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the project’s work sites, the tunnel boring machines and a sneak peek of the station they named before the public unveiling – as well as bragging rights.
