A section of Garden Street will remain partially closed over the weekend.
If you were planning on heading down to Chapel Street for a Friday afternoon drink, it might be time for a change of plans.
At 9.50am this morning, workers ruptured a pipe on Garden Street, near the South Yarra end of Chapel Street, and the smell of gas was noticeable nearby almost immediately after.
Approximately 400 people were evacuated from the Jam Factory and nearby buildings, according to a spokesperson for the City of Stonnington.
More than a dozen firefighters were sent to the scene to disperse the gas cloud, as well as a number of police.
Although the leak has been managed and air in the area is now safe, the Council says the South Yarra end of Garden Street will remain “partially closed” for the next few days in order for the issue to be further assessed.
