Stemming from a love of food and cooking, The Odd Room is partners’ Andrew Affandi and Yuko Marcos’ (whose backgrounds are engineering and marketing respectively) first hospitality venture. But you wouldn’t know it.

While the exterior could easily be missed from the street, the interior is a different story. Copper lights, mint walls, a tiled and timber bar and matte-black coffee machine make for a slick space that is as concerned with aesthetics at it is with tasty food. If you can get past the hipster cliché, you’ll have to admit that its rice pudding with salted caramel does look pretty good served in a jar.

The menu offering here is a little more experimental than what you’d expect at a cafe, and old favourites are given a refreshing twist. Coffee includes rotating seasonal single-origins, pour-over and a cold drip.

Other menu items include Italian meatballs with smoked scarmoza, eggs and Napoli sauce; French toast with salted caramel and lemon mousse; and specials such as the pan-fried blue-eye fillet with citrus fennel salad and orange vinaigrette. For those on the go there is a selection of enticing sweets, sandwiches, pies and quiches that fill the counter.
