Moody and monochromatic, Assin is the striking silhouette amid Melbourne’s fashion crowd.

Its Little Collins Street bunker is the city’s keeper of luxury minimalism for men and women, stocking high-end brands known for their uncompromising approach to design.

Despite the subdued colour palette, each piece on the racks is a statement maker. Among the seasonal edit, you’ll regularly find playful takes on classic shirting and denim from Junya Watanabe; Comme des Garçons; Boris Bidjan Saberi’s leather armour-like designs; Vivienne Westwood pieces; and a locally made, in-house brand that’s heavy on black and unexpected detailing.

The store itself is all polished concrete floors and steel beams. Aspirational sales assistants move about in limited-edition sneakers and draped layers.

Yes, prices are high, but this is the temple of avant-garde fashion, and design kids worship regularly. It’s no surprise this one has been in business since 2004.
