The original Entrecôte concept is so simple and so appealing, it’s no surprise restaurateur Jason M Jones (The Stables of Como, Friends of Mine) was able to follow it up with a CBD incarnation.
As in South Yarra, this warm bistro is all about steak. Specifically, grass-fed Black Angus Porterhouse from Hopkins River, with the very secret sauce maison and limitless frites. Really – just call a waiter over any time you need a refill.
Along with the compulsory bifteck, there’s a selection of about ten hors d’oeuvres, including spanner crab tartine with witlof, cress and pickled shallot; escargot in garlic butter; onion soup; and the simple but wildly satisfying “prawns mayonnaise”.
The wine list’s equally Francophillic, tending mainly to old-world wines. But this being a city venue that hosts its share of business lunches, there’s also plenty of big Barossa shiraz and other classic Australian reds in the mix. The love doesn’t end there; there’s also a daily happy hour from 4pm–6pm, which includes $2 oysters and $12 glasses of Mumm champagne.
Get in at the other end of the day for $2.50 takeaway coffee, tarts and other pastries from the takeaway window that opens at 7am.
Designer Brahman Perera’s fit-out is familiar: red awnings, deco lampshades, brass, velvet, marble and mosaic tiles. It’s a tongue-in-cheek dig at the classic French bistro.
