Since starting in 2009, Market Lane has been a major driver in progressing Melbourne’s specialty-coffee scene. This fifth shop opened in historic Portland House in the first quarter of 2016, joining the original flagship in Prahran Market and subsequent ventures on Therry Street, in the Queen Vic Market and Carlton.

Sarah Trotter of Hearth Studio designed the space, drawing inspiration from the art of Australian tonalist painter Clarice Beckett (1887–1935). Her 1931 work, Collins Street, evening, depicts a scene near the cafe’s location.

The elegant space draws heavily on Beckett’s soft colour palette, using muted-grey fabric panelling, eucalyptus greens, soft blues, walnut tones, copper and tessellated tiles.

The espresso and filter offerings remain relatively consistent with Market Lane’s other locations (no soy, no skim milk here either). Cakes and pastries are supplied by Beatrix in North Melbourne. The shop also sells beans and coffee paraphernalia for home use.
