Loop Project Space & Bar
There aren’t many places in Melbourne like Loop. The Shadow Electric at the Abbotsford Convent is one. The Meat Market in North Melbourne is another. But then again, neither of those spots have rooftop bars with spectacular city views.
Enter at the ground floor to find a large multi-purpose room that hosts regular film screenings, DJs, visual-art shows and other creative endeavours. Outside of all that, it’s just a fun place for a drink.
Boags, Kirin and Stella are served on tap. The few dozen beers and ciders in bottles also come from major breweries. Wines come from Europe and Australia, focusing on light, drinkable varieties such as riesling and pinot noir. But this level is more about the cheap and cheerful atmosphere than delivering top-quality product.
If you’re after the latter, make for the roof, which is accessible via a rather long staircase. The intimate space is hemmed with succulents in planter boxes, their pale greenery accentuated by the bar’s matte black walls and black Astroturf floor. Across the roof, strung blue baubles tremble in the breeze and all around are views of the rooftops and skyscrapers of the CBD.
Here there are bottles and tinnies from Bridge Road Brewery, Bodriggy, Kaiju!, Boatrocker and more. The strong cocktail list focuses on earthy, floral and herbal flavours rather than the sticky, sweet bases typical of tropical cocktails.
