Once known as two smaller venues, Markov Place and Little Markov, Markov underwent a pared-back redevelopment in 2013.

Previously more of a formal dining spot, the old menu and drinks list have been replaced with a bank of local beers, cider on tap and a snappy, crowd-pleasing menu of properly done pub-style classics.

Now the space is more closely aligned with The Empress, owner Guy David's other venture. With high ceilings, exposed beams and exposed brick walls, Markov's atmosphere is warm and unpretentious.

The menu is all about shareable, beer-friendly fare such as potato and cheddar croquettes to start; and burgers, steak and fancy fish and chips for a solid, no-fuss main.

Casual and budget-conscious, Markov is perfect for a spontaneous meal with friends, or even a pre- or post-movie pit stop for regulars of the nearby Cinema Nova.
