Whiplash
Features
Retired AFL player Jordan Roughead and his former barista Jordan Faulkner joined forces to open this sandwich and bagel joint in Hawthorn, along with fellow Collingwood players Brody Mihocek, Callum Brown and Nathan Murphy.
The menu overseen by chef Will Steele includes a highlight chicken sando featuring thighs soaked in buttermilk, dredged, deep-fried and served on Rustica milk buns with house-made pickles, slaw and harissa mayo. There are also a few bagels – think smoked salmon, pastrami and fresh tomato and basil, all served on a cream-cheese base – and Veneziano coffee.
The building is a former milk bar the owners found on Gumtree; transformed with a swish, retro-inspired red and white fit-out. It’s a bright and colourful spot to grab a coffee and a quick bite.
As for the name, it’s inspired by the eponymous 2014 film about a promising young jazz drummer and his mentor. After dreaming of opening his own cafe for so long, Faulkner wanted to pay homage to a similar relationship he had with a mentor during his hospitality career.
